The rivers which rise in this area provide water for more than 130 towns and villages including Cape Coast.

The Kakum National Park protects about 40 large animal species and approximately 274 species of birds. The flora and fauna is so extensive that some areas have about 200 different species on one hectare. Most trees in the Park reach a height between 18m and 40m but there are others which are very old and reach a height of 70m. The main attraction in the Park is the Canopy Walk way which is the only one in Africa that high up. The Canopy Walk consists of seven separate bridges reaching from one forest giant to another. It is an exciting experience especially for bird watchers. There is also the possibility of hiking through the forest for varying time ranging from 1 hour to 2 - 3 days. Platforms have been erected at vantage points on the path through the forest to spend the night.
